San Diego is a cool place if you've never been. There is plenty to do and even in November, the weather is really good; 80's and a lot of sunshine.
But during a recent visit there for a conference I noticed another side to the city. San Diego has some of the world's worst drivers-yes, even compared to us.
I was stationed in San Diego when I got out of the Navy a few years back - well, a lot of years - when the Rolling Stones were on only their fourth farewell tour and before Joan Rivers looked Asian.

Cigarette warehouse goes up in smoke
DeKalb County firefighters Thursday morning battled a three-alarm blaze that destroyed a large warehouse off Lawrenceville Highway.
The fire apparently started before 6:30 a.m. in a storage trailer parked behind the A to Z Wholesale warehouse on Jordan Lane, according to DeKalb fire spokesman Fred Johnson.
The fire spread into the warehouse, eventually causing the roof of the building to collapse, Johnson said.

SWAT team nabs fugitive wanted in shooting
Gwinnett deputies on Wednesday arrested a fugitive wanted in connection with a shooting in DeKalb County. Deputies received information Wednesday morning from DeKalb County's fugitive unit that Bertram Alton Gordon was holed up at a residence near Norcross with several firearms.
He had also made threats that he was not going back to jail, according to Gwinnett County Sheriff's spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais. A SWAT team was preparing to force entry into the house, on the 6000 block of Rotondo Place, when Gordon opened the door and got down on the ground. Gordon was arrested without a fight and released to the custody of DeKalb County, where he faces an aggravated assault charge.

DeKalb investigates small fire at Jewish frat house
DeKalb County fire officials are investigating the cause of a small fire started over the weekend at a predominantly Jewish fraternity house at Emory University.
According to a statement released by Emory, the fire was reported early Sunday morning in a side-entrance doorway of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house. The fire damaged the door's wooden framing and caused smoke damage inside. There were no injuries and the house is considered habitable.
The campus last week was site to what some have dubbed "Palestinian Week," which included the building of a mock fence protesting Israel's West Bank security barrier. A university spokeswoman said officials have no evidence the fraternity was targeted.

Clarkston police unveil secret weapon
Clarkston city police Wednesday officially unveiled their latest weapon against crime: a blue-light equipped, four-seater golf cart.
The cart can't go more than 40 miles an hour, but within a month's time it has nabbed two burglary suspects, foiled a couple of drug sales behind convenience stores, cut down on suspicious activity on the city's bike trails and collared some truants.
"This car is electric," said police Chief Tony Scipio. "They can't hear it come."

Witness: Fight over fight led to fatal stray bullet
A witness to the stray-bullet killing of a pregnant mother of three testified Monday that the shooting started between two men who had argued — over whether to break up another argument.
Quishanna Loynes, 29, was sitting in a DeKalb apartment with her three daughters, brushing the hair of one of them for the night, when a bullet came through a window and hit her in the back on Oct. 20.
Eric Lamar Ferrell, 32, and Dequonist Lucas, 24, were charged with murder and remain in the DeKalb County jail.

Episode 97 - Golden Shower
The California Kid is back in Virginia. That means that the 12 second video clips and the IACP conference are over. Mack did his "This Old House" imitation last week. Rich really did not accomplish much of anything but he had fun doing it.
We start off this week with the special delivery of a rape subject - to the police station. How about a 71 year-old cop that shows no sign of slowing down? A Florida deputy get into hot water as a result of his alarm clock idea. No more freedom of expression in the Seattle parks if it includes bare butts. I am going to run from you now. Could you hold my driver's license? A Wisconsin cop is pissed off. Will a mule deer Tase? A day in the life of a Flathead County, Montana deputy. No money available for your robbery? File a complaint.

DeKalb cops try to win friends
Terrell Bolton acknowledges there is a cost to his signature initiative as DeKalb County's police chief.
His patrol officers are so swamped that response times for high-priority 911 calls nearly doubled in four years, reaching an average of 11 minutes this year. But rather than having all available officers answer those calls, Bolton has devoted 50 new slots for officers to "interactive community policing."
The 50 officers — and their five sergeants — were told early this year to cultivate relationships, hand out their cellphone numbers and become the resident experts for their own assigned slices of the county. The officers' job description is to solve problems in the neighborhoods they serve.
